About the Ranch

Boyd Bison Ranch is a historic Alaskan homestead, established in 1938 and proudly operated by the same family for five generations. Nestled in the heart of the Matanuska Valley, the ranch remains a fully operational bison ranch and a uniquely Alaskan event venue. With breathtaking panoramic mountain views, a peaceful lake, and panoramic natural beauty in every direction, the ranch provides the perfect backdrop for creative experiences like The Painted Picnic—our outdoor painting classes inspired by the land itself.

FAQs

Where are you located?

Boyd Bison Ranch is located in Palmer, Alaska—just 10 minutes from both downtown Palmer and Wasilla, and about 1 hour east of Anchorage. We're also only 20 minutes from the scenic wonders of Hatcher Pass and Independence Mine, making us a perfect stop on your Alaskan adventure.

What should I bring?

Please bring a lunch or picnic and anything you'll need to stay comfortable outdoors for up to 3 hours. That could include:

  • A water bottle

  • A blanket or cushion for seating comfort

  • Sunglasses or a hat

  • Bug spray or sunscreen (season depending)

  • A camera to capture the views!

We provide complimentary coffee and water, and we have cold drinks, locally made snacks, and baked goods available for purchase.

What should I wear?

Dress in layers! Our outdoor painting classes are held under a 32x88-foot covered log pavilion, so you’ll be protected from direct rain and sun, but Palmer is famous for its breeze. Warm, layered clothing and comfortable footwear are recommended. Even in summer, it’s wise to bring an extra jacket or windbreaker just in case.

Can I bring my kids?

While our classes are designed with adults in mind, children under 10 years of age are welcome with a paying adult and must be supervised at all times. Children over 10 years of age require a ticket to the class. Our family-focused private sessions are ideal for families with young artists—check our class listings for more details!

Is the venue accessible?

While we do our best to provide flat, level walking areas and spacious restroom facilities, Boyd Bison Ranch is an outdoor venue with natural terrain. Most guests are able to access the grounds without issue, but all visitors must assess their own mobility needs and determine whether the space is appropriate for them. If you have specific questions about accessibility, feel free to reach out—we’re happy to help however we can.

Can I bring my dog?

Well-behaved dogs are welcome, but they must remain in your vehicle during class time. During the lunch break, you're welcome to walk your dog on a leash in designated areas. All pet waste must be picked up and properly disposed of.

Please note:

  • You are fully responsible for your pet’s behavior and any damage they may cause. This includes injuries to or from livestock.

Is there parking for RVs?

Yes! RVs and camper vans are welcome at Boyd Bison Ranch. We have space for parking larger vehicles, but please let us know in advance if you'll be arriving in an RV so we can guide you to the best place to park. Please note that we do not offer RV hookups or overnight camping during painting classes unless otherwise arranged for a private event.

Will I get to see the bison?

Maybe! Our bison roam freely across 400 acres of wooded, undeveloped land. They’re often spotted grazing on the hill as you drive in, but sightings aren't guaranteed—they go where they please! Be sure to drive slowly once you enter the gates and continue all the way down to the lake. Our ranch speed limit is 10 mph for everyone’s safety—yours and theirs!

Are there restroom facilities?

Yes. We offer a modern restroom building with flush toilets and sinks, which is open during the lunch hour of your class. For your convenience throughout the rest of the session, we also have a clean outhouse with a hand wash station nearby.

Do I need to bring any painting supplies?

Nope! We've got you covered. All painting supplies are included for you to use during the class:

  • Canvas

  • Tabletop easel

  • Acrylic paint

  • Paint pallet

  • Brushes

  • Water cups and paper towels

Just show up ready to paint, have fun, and take home your very own masterpiece!

Do I need any painting experience?

Not at all! Our classes are beginner-friendly and include step-by-step guidance. Whether you’re picking up a paintbrush for the first time or returning to a favorite hobby, you’ll feel right at home.

What time should I arrive?

Please plan to arrive 10–15 minutes early to check in, grab a coffee, and get settled. Classes begin promptly, and arriving late may result in missing important instruction or setup time..

What happens if it rains or the weather is bad?

Our outdoor pavilion offers excellent protection from the elements. In the case of extremely poor weather (high winds, lightning, or heavy downpour), we may move your session indoors to our cozy lakeside Creative Cabin, or reschedule if necessary. We’ll keep you updated by email or text prior to the event if any changes arise.

How do I book a session?

Classes can be booked online through our website. Simply select the class type (group session or private session), choose your preferred date, and follow the checkout process. Please contact us by phone, text, or email to book a private event or paint party.

What is your cancellation policy?

We do not offer refunds, but we understand that life happens. If you’re unable to attend your scheduled class, we’ll do our best to accommodate you by rescheduling for another available date. Please contact us as soon as possible if you need to make a change so we can help you find a new session that works for you.

Is there cell phone service or WiFi?

Cell service is generally reliable at the ranch, but signal strength may vary depending on your provider. We do not currently offer public Wi-Fi, so plan accordingly if you're relying on internet access.
